How to Downgrade Windows Vista to XP

Windows Vista sucks? Or simply don’t like Vista?

If you’re thinking to downgrade your Vista system to run on Windows XP, it’s not as easy as you think. There is no direct path to downgrade Vista to XP. You can’t simply insert the XP installation CD media into the CD-ROM drive and hope to ‘upgrade’ and replace the Vista with Windows XP usual install routine because Vista won’t allow it to be overwritten. XP will treat Vista as ’superior’ operating system and refuse to install over it.

There’re actually few options available instead of completely uninstall Vista as listed below. But if you decide to downgrade from Vista to install XP, there is also a simple guideline that you can observe to ensure that the migration goes smoothly.

Option 1 - Dual Boot

It’s by far the easier and best method to run XP instead of Vista if you have another partition or hard disk. Simply boot up any XP setup media and install XP into different partition or hard drive than the Vista installation. Once completed, you can choose to boot up either XP or Vista, and has the best of both world.

Option 2 - Virtual Machine

Install Virtual PC 2007 (both free) or any other virtualization software, and then install Windows XP into the virtual machine environment. You will get XP which runs inside Vista, with minor compromise on speed, performance and have to go through Vista first on every bootup.

Option 3 - Format the Hard Drive, Wipe Off Vista and Install XP

For those who totally fed up with Vista and just want XP, or prefer a clean installation of OS has only this option to rely on. To downgrade to XP from Vista, you have to basically delete the whole hard disk that installed with Vista, and start anew with XP. Here’s a simple guide and procedures that you can try to follow to switch to XP. However, each system configuration is different, so you may have to adapt the steps to suit your own need.

Download all drivers for your system for Windows XP from the manufacturer’s website. Copy the drivers files to a USB flash driver or external hard drive or burn them to CD/DVD.
Find a Windows XP installation CD (should be pretty easy to find or else you can search in torrent sites such as Demonoid to download via BT network such as uTorrent and BitComet or search and download via ED2K network client such as eMule. You can also use Volume Licensing (VL) CD, retail (FPP) disc, or system builder hologram CD provided by Microsoft.
You will also need a XP product key even if you legally can downgrade from Vista Ultimate or Business edition. The Vista serial number won’t works with XP. (try to search for XP product key on web.
Backup to USB flash disk, external portable hard disk or CD/DVD every data files and any other things such as documents, downloads, pictures, movies, programs and etc that you need and want to keep. You can also create a second partition with disk management utilities such as Acronis Director or Partition Magic, and then move the data files to the new partition.
Ensure that also you have CD or DVD setup media for the software applications that you want to install and use after wiping off your system from Vista.
If your OEM doesn’t provide you with recovery CD/DVD discs and Windows setup media discs (it’s because they’re stored in the hard disk in hidden location), you may want to burn a copy of recovery CD to CD/DVD first before you proceed, just in case the hidden partition is lost and you want to recover your computer to original state. If the system has SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive, locate the driver for SATA controller and put it in USB flash drive, diskette or CD first. If you have PATA (normal IDE) hard disk, simply go to BIOS CMOS to disable SATA or Native SATA mode if you don’t want to install XP on SATA hard drive. Else, you can also create an XP install disc with the SATA drivers integrated by using tool such as nLite.
In the BIOS, also set the CD or DVD optical drive as the first boot device in the boot sequence.
Put in the Windows XP installation CD into CDROM drive and boot up the computer by using the CD. You probably need to press a key when prompted with “Press Any Key to Boot from CD…”.
If you’re using SATA hard disk with driver on external media (not integrated into XP setup disk), remember to press F6 when you see the message at the status base: “Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver…” during the very initial stage of setup to load the SATA driver so that the SATA hard disk can be recognized.
Run through the setup wizard at per normal. However, when prompting for where to install Windows Vista, delete (by pressing D and then confirmation), create and format the Vista disk drive or partition (if you have multiple partition). And then choose to install on that just formatted partition or hard drive.
IMPORTANT: If you choose the wrong hard disk or partition with data to delete, you will lose your essential data.

Note: If the setup does not allow you to delete or format the Vista partition or drive, you will need to find a third party software that can recognize and read NTFS filesystem to clear the drive or partition first.
Enter any product key for XP. Vista product key will not work.
If you own a legitimate Windows Vista edition that allows for downgrade (See Vista downgrade rights, call Microsoft after performing the clean install of Windows XP Pro to activate the XP installation. Notify Microsoft that you’re downgrading from Vista and require to activate XP Professional or other version allowed newly installed. You won’t get a new Windows XP product key though. You will have to read out the long Installation ID plus your original Vista serial key, and Microsoft will provide an activation ID that will make the XP usable.
Install the drivers for your system devices.
Reinstall any software programs that you want to use.
Move back the data files and documents.

How I Became Sane Again

I thought you might find it useful to know how and why I went mad, and how I became sane again.

Some Introduction First...

Shakespeare said in Hamlet that the greatest gift a man may possess is to “know thyself”.

If you do not know yourself, you cannot know what will make you happy, what you should do in life or even where you are and where you are going. A few people are born knowing their true nature and never have to wrestle with the feelings of despair, loneliness and lack of self-identity. However, the majority of people never know their true nature, and the some remaining must struggle to find their path – often not finding it until they are well past their forties or even much older again.

Much of how we see ourselves is how our culture, society and peer group think we ought to
see ourselves. This is in fact generally a good thing – it saves us having to figure out the vast
majority of things for ourselves because we simply inherit understanding from others. On the other hand, the cost is that when those around us make a mistake, we also inherit that misunderstanding.

About Me, Ruth And Our End...

I thought then of my relationship with Ruth is what sent me mad because I had defined myself as having her being a part of me. When our relationship collapsed and ended, the representation of reality I had built myself became fundamentally contradictory with itself at a core level, causing an increasing fall into paranoia, delusions, hallucinations and self-loathing.

At the core of my problem was that I had lied to myself because I preferred to believe the lie rather than reality – that Ruth and I could never work. Often the core of other people’s problems is that they think something happened to them which their conditioning says ought to be what they think happened to them, when in fact something quite different happened. For example, if a painful event happens eg; your girlfriend cheats on you, society may take the view that she was in the wrong and you are in the right.
However, if you did not sexually satisfy her because you are in fact gay, then in reality you are more in the wrong for misleading her and probably causing her a great deal of disappointment and pain. Thus her infidelity may cause you to become very depressed because subconsciously you know that you are the cause, but you have repressed a better, more accurate understanding of yourself.

How to become sane again...

How I became sane again was to fix my memory by restoring it closer to what actually happened rather than what I thought ought to have happened.

The technique is very simple.

1. Determine what are the most painful memories which you think are related to your problem.
2. Every night, before you sleep, reimagine the painful situation like a waking dream. Ideally
you do this just as you fall asleep. You may find repeating it over and over again in your mind useful.
3. Your subconscious mind will explore that memory and everything related to it as you sleep.
Pathways which had been deinforced due to repression will become reinforced.
4. Over the next few weeks, you will realize many things you had forgotten, and one day it will
all suddenly click together and you will have a new understanding of the memory. Your mental model will have just become improved. It may take many months, or even years to come to a full realization of your improved mental model but once you fix it, everything else will take care of itself over time.

In this process, you need to remember a few things: (i) The more painful the thought or memory, usually the better. (ii) You need to do this every night without fail. Doing so shows your
commitment to fix your mental model and to get better. Trying to cop out by saying “I’m too tired tonight” or “I couldn’t be bothered” or more commonly “It hurts too much to think about it” shows you are not yet ready to transcend and you will need to suffer some more despair, loneliness and unhappiness before you become ready. I’ll put it crudely and brutally – do you want to keep suffering at a low level, or endure a lot of pain now to free yourself forever?

And (iii), the most important – be honest with yourself. Maybe a part of you secretly enjoyed the
horrible thing that happened to you. Maybe you do delight in dreaming about serial-murdering
people. Maybe you do like torturing small animals. There is nothing wrong with thinking evil
thoughts – you must think them to think good thoughts – it is necessary in order to be well
balanced. Where right and wrong come in is what you do with these thoughts – if and how you
actualise them into reality.

Only by being truly honest with yourself can you ever truly get to know yourself; only by truly
knowing yourself can you really know what you can do; and only by truly knowing what you can
do, can you know what you want to do. This is how I discovered my path. I hope you find it useful in discovering yours.

This technique is actually really useful for a whole pile of things. If I have a problem to solve, or an important article to write like this one I am writing now, I perform this technique. Before long it becomes second nature and you will do it automatically every time you go to sleep. It is in fact a meditative technique which the modern world has forgotten and it is the same mechanism used by psychologists when working with clients.

You don’t want to use this technique on every single painful thing that happened to you ever. It might sound tempting, but I think you still need some painful, embarrassing memories to haunt you. Without them you lose part of the human condition, and also distance yourself so far from societal norms you could no longer properly connect with them and without others, you cannot be.

Whereupon the good king, being somewhat dismayed in himself, as soon as he returned home chided his wife, "How does it happen that you never told me of this problem?".
The woman being a simple, chaste and harmless dame said, "Sir I had thought all men's breath had smelled so"

What is evident from this story is that our faults which are obvious to the world we know by our enemies sooner than by our friends and familiars!

Friends always cover up things so as to not offend each other. Friends often agree on things in order to avoid an argument. For this reason you do not know friends as well as you imagine.
Every friendship is characterized by high expectations which very often end up in disrespect and envy.
On the other hand enemies are an untapped gold mine that you must learn to exploit. Make your enemy a friend and you'll get a friend who has something to prove. And the person who has something to prove will move mountains for you!

Considering what has been said above you'll be far better off with a declared opponent or two than not knowing where your real enemies lie!
